Discussion:
Is breastmilk pareve or diary?
(too old to reply)

This came up briefly on a misc.kids thread and I am still confused,
so hopefully someone here can point me to an authoritative source,
if there is one.

I have always been under the impression that breastmilk is always
considered pareve. However, in the misc.kids thread, the claim was
made that (some?) ultra-orthodox authorities consider it dairy.
Anyone know what the story is with that? Does it matter whether
the mother is consuming a dairy-free diet herself (as may be the
case with allergies or other conditions)?

I don't have a practical need for this information, as my
breastfeeding
days are over. I could ask my local rabbi, but I am interested in the
ultra-orthodox position on this, and there isn't an orthodox community
at all where I live, so CYLOR is not possible.

Thanks in advance,
--Robyn

According to Dr. Josh Backon, a regular poster on sjcm, breast milk is
Pareve. The source he quotes is Shulchan Aruch YOREH DEAH 87:4; 81:7.

Furthermore, he goes on and says

"and if meat accidentally fell into breastmilk
it's completely permissible to eat (Pri Toar s"k 10). The only
prohibition being MAR'IT AYIN where people might think the milk is
cow's milk."

Hope that helps.

Thanks. Does anyone know if this is more or less universally accepted
or if there is any significant dissenting ruling?

Thanks,

My understanding is that to avoid the problem of maris ayin (Marit
Ayin, literally, "what the eye sees," meaning "what people might see")
is that it is 100% pareve, but shouldn't be drunk out of a cup. And
adults should not get into the habit of drinking it regularly, whether
from a cup or otherwise. :-)

Hope this helps!

I'm not Orthodox, but there's been a discussion on this topic in scjm
recently (stemming from the Remedia formula problem). ALL have posted
that breastmilk is PAREVE - always, including some extremely orthodox
members of the discussion.

And, of course, infants are not bound by the restriction on mixing milk
and meat anyway, since it is a health issue for them. The main issue
with infants mixing milk & meat is the possible contamination of the
adults' food and utensils.
