Not to be too 60's organic, but what about planning, designing and making
your own tallit. As I recall some of the old Jewish hippie manuals suggest
this (like the 2nd Jewish catalogue - which has a section on Bar Miztvah).
Many communities have people who know the halacha designing the Tallit and
tying tzitzit (ask your Rabbi) and this makes the Tallit personal. You can
even use extra (wimple?) cloth to make a matching kipah.
When I wanted to buy my wife a tallit this is exactly what I did (and will
probably do the same for my daughter and son when they become Bnei Mitzvah).
Of course this doesn't work for Tefillin.
