This is not true. The testing (done by Hila Bendavid of the Ministry
of Health's Food Division lab) was done by fluorometric testing rather
than by HPLC with fluorometric sensor. There is nothing wrong
with REMEDIA soy formula. The problem is that mothers in Israel give
their infants tea and fruit juice. Up until 4 months ago, the fruit
juice here was flavored water; a new brand PRIGAT FREEZE is loaded with
antioxidant polyphenols. The only problem is that this contains
thiaminase which inhibits the activity of Vitamin B1. The police team
headed by Deputy Superintendant Avi Mantsur found that the 16/5000
mothers whose infants were hospitalized [99.96% of the other infants
supposedly fed thiamine free formula for 3-4 months are perfectly
healthy.If this is true, all the textbooks in nutrition from the past
70 years will have to be junked] did feed their infants humungous
amounts of tea and PRIGAT fruit juice.

Do a MEDLINE search on "thiaminase" or "antithiamine" and you'll see:

There are a number of food items containing thiaminases that act as
antithiamine compounds, and these include: tea (Bibl Nutr Dieta 1970;
15:180; Am J Clinical Nutrition 2001;74:712-713), blueberies (Int Z
Vitaminforsch 1968;38:387-91), fish especially CARP (as in gefillte
fish !!) (Bibl Nutr Dieta 1970;15:182-183), mustard (Biochim
Biophysica Acta 1974;343:211-214), tuna (!!) (Experientia 1968;
24:1146-1147), and caffeic acid (Int J Vit Nutrition Reseatch 1976;
46:143-148).

Israeli mothers are prone to give their infants tea ! (Expert
witness from Professor Eli Chavivi at Hebrew U med school 10 years
ago) and fruit juice.

So my guess is that the hospitalized infants were also given (at home)
formula and tea or high phenolic juice (rather than 100% tap water).
